So I have a confession to make. It’s really quite embarrassing to admit but recently I’ve been getting some serious horn for wildlife. I blame last year’s Autumnwatch, (UK nature show, funnily enough based around the idea of watching the season of Autumn unfold).
It was on prime time, and distracted me with shiny, colourful snaps of red squirrels. And that was it. I’ve tried sex, binge drinking and other traditional student pastimes but so far nothing has cured the itch. So here goes, I’m using this blog to record my clumsy attempt to become a nature geek, whilst still trying to maintain a social life.
Wish me luck.
Good for you! Visiting well-known wildlife hotspots is fun and enjoyable, but for me the challenge of getting to know a local patch can be even more rewarding. If you can really understand your local species, no matter how common or unexotic they are – their habits, their behaviour and how they fit together as an ecosystem – then you can truly call yourself an expert.
Good luck on your journey – I look forward to hearing about it.

Thanks, that’s really inspiring.
I like to get out of the city when I can, but without a car it can be hard, so it’s great to be able to look at the urban side of natural life in a more positive way. Just watching my local birds for an hour has taught me tons about their social interactions and heirarchy!
And your blog has inspired me to exlpore the countryside near my parent’s home this summer to try and find some badgers.
